Stork in a Teacup

My daughter was expecting twins – a boy and a girl.  She did not have any theme in mind and is fairly nostalgic in her tastes.  I sought to create a traditional shower for her with all the standard colors – pink, blue, green, yellow, and lavender.  Her cake was to be the centerpiece.

I knew from the day we found out that they were a boy and a girl that I would make a stork in a teacup.  I began months ahead of time creating a model for the stork and making the flowers and other pieces for this little sculpture.  The first teacup totally collapsed under the weight of the contents due to my mistake of making out of fondant instead of  gum paste.  The second one came out much better.

The blanket was born out of the necessity of covering up some mistakes on the tier below it, and also I was inspired after dropping a sheet of fondant and falling in love with the draping of it on the table.  I couldn’t find a button mold to save my life, so I made one out of a button and some gum paste.  It was not as easy as working with a silicone mold, but it worked.  Of course now, you can pick up a silicone button mold at Michael’s.

The bottom tier was my first attempt at a harlequin design.  It was so amazing to see how finished those little flowers made it look.  Frankly, with the exception to the stork in the teacup, the entire cake was a work in progress right up until a few hours before the shower.  I was a wreck because I didn’t have a clear vision of what I wanted to do, and I really wanted the cake to be perfect for my daughter.  In the end it was fine, and she loved it.  I think she still has the stork topper in her freezer.

In addition to the cake, I wanted to give my new Cricut Cake some practice, so my sister Joyce and I made cookie favors with the babies’ initials on them.  I can do just about anything with these cookies and my Cricut, so I think we’ll be making a lot of them in the future.
