The Twins Turn Two!!!

Well, it was bound to happen.  It was only yesterday when these grandbabies of mine were born.  I can still see them all snuggled up in their hospital bassinets, looking so tiny and new.  Their last birthday – a major milestone in birthdays – was just a flash ago.  Now they’ve gone and celebrated another one!  I wish there was a button to slow things down a bit – I am loving watching them and don’t want it to move so fast.

James is our daredevil and resident goofball.  He’s cute, knows it, and will use it whenever necessary.  The boy instinctively loves anything that makes a lot of noise, looks dangerous, or is something that his Daddy does.  He is learning to ride a two-wheeled stryder bike (no pedals) and is already starting to coast down hills.  If he masters that, we’ll next be seeing him on his own motorcycle at the races (I won’t be watching).  He also has a softer side – he loves his sister and will gladly help her feed her dolls.

Gracie is a little comedian.  She loves to make us laugh.  Most of the time, you can find her singing and dancing with an uncanny sense of rhythm.  You should see her routine to “Single Ladies” (Uh, oh, oh).  She can keep up with her brother’s daring feats but is mostly happy entertaining and caring for her growing family of baby dolls.  The best thing is whenever she first sees me, she acts as if I’ve been gone forever – running into my arms, singing, “NooooNaaa”.  How great is that!

These little guys have stolen my heart.  Making their birthday cake was so much fun.  My daughter gave me the invitation with the goldfish theme and told me to “have at it” (my favorite kind of request).  We only needed cake for 35, but my idea was a bit grander than that.  I made the bottom tier out of marble cake and used styrofoam dummies for the two upper tiers.  It was funny to see people’s reactions when I lifted the top two tiers and carried them off after the cutting.  The party was the week before their actual birthday, so we got to reuse those layers at their birthday dinner.  You’ll have to watch the slide show below to see the “demolition”.  Let’s just hope that next year’s birthday comes a little less quickly.

I have to say that James & Gracie received an unimaginable amount of amazing birthday gifts, but this post that you wrote is the best gift that I could have received mom. I live their life with them every day & sometimes forget to take a step back & actually observe it. You captured so much of them with your words. I know your intention was a post about the cake, but after reading it…it is so much more. Thank you for this unintentional gift. They could not have been blessed with a better more loving nonna. I love you.
