My sweet obsession
I can’t believe it is September. This past summer is a blur and it looks like the last months of the year will be no different. I have not posted my cakes as they were made, simply because there hasn’t been time. My last post was, as this one is short because I am over-committed and understaffed. Really, I never had any staff to speak of – but I sure could use a wife!
So, I am behind by a cake or two and will post them now. Most recently (yesterday), I made a cake for a baby shower for my friend’s daughter. She is having a boy and my instructions were “nothing too cutsie” and the colors of yellow and gray. My daughters aren’t into “cutsie” either, so I could appreciate this. I loved the color scheme, but a little concerned about making it masculine enough without going overboard with the gray. I had been dying to try making the little sugar sneakers I had seen online, so this was going to be my opportunity. The rest of the design just gradually fell into place.
The worst part about this cake was the amount of fondant and gum paste it took. I tried making my own fondant with the last cake, but it was a nightmare to deal with and just added hours to my work time. I swore then that moving forward, I would only use commercial fondant – which by the way, tastes yummy.
Besides the little sneaks, I think my favorite part of this cake was the white blanket. I love the way fondant drapes like fabric. I also like the “fringe” along the edge of it. I didn’t stay for the shower, but I can only imagine what a task it was to disassemble the cake for cutting! Thanks France for the opportunity to do this cake. Best wishes to Melissa and her growing family!
