My sweet obsession
Sitting at their party yesterday, we were trying to figure out where this year has gone. For a grandparent, the first year holds so much action without the actual stress of being a parent. It was very enjoyable. First smiles, turning over, sitting up, getting teeth, crawling, walking, and now first words! Spoiling them is another pleasure that parents should avoid, but grandparents are privileged to indulge in. Life is good.
As for the party…my daughter chose the Very Hungry Caterpillar theme. She did a beautiful job of decorating – she made a huge caterpillar out of colored lanterns and sat it on the branch of a large old tree. Her tables were all color coordinated and sported themed fabric toppers. There were lots of balloons. Everything looked so fun. To make the cake, I took their book home last week and went to work making all the various food pieces that the little bugger ate his way through. A little dimension was added with some leaves and a caterpillar. The whole thing was topped with a bright butterfly.
If you are not familiar with Eric Carle, his work involves collage and the use of beautiful color blends. Everything is simple, yet his work has a lot of depth. I enjoyed translating his work on a cake, and I am looking forward to trying some of my other favorite children’s authors. Do I hear Wild Things roaring in my head? (another rhetorical question)
