The Gingerbread Project – Almost Done

Finally!  A chunk of uninterrupted time to do some work on the gingerbread cottage.  My daughter and I were not able to come together for this all week.   This morning, we were up early and thatching a roof and building the chimney.

I have to say, I really love the royal icing recipe included with the directions for this project.  It only has a few ingredients and its consistency is so easy to work with.  It dries beautifully, without losing any of its shape during the process.  Actually, the recipe for the gingerbread was very good as well.  I am planning to make more later today for cookies for my Christmas party.  Recipes can be tricky things.  I plan to learn some baking chemistry in 2012 so I can begin to make some of my own.  I hope I have more patience for science now than I did in high school!

As you can see in the “before” photos, the plain gingerbread is just that – PLAIN!  You can see that the roofline is exposed before the icicles are applied, and the bare chimney form without its stones and mortar.  It’s funny how each step of the project is just another layer of detail to the previous.  Just when you think it looks done, the addition of a finishing touch changes the appearance.  I could not believe the difference the wreath on the chimney made.  In the end, it’s hard to imagine it without all of the adornment.

We had a small scare.  Last night my husband informed me of how much he liked the mini-wheats I had bought!  He has really been struggling with staying away from our cottage decorations, and even though the box was sitting with the rest of the “off-limits” stuff, he is still proclaiming his innocence!  To his credit, I never specifically said that the mini-wheats were for our roofing materials.  We completed the roof with about a half of a bowl to spare.  After finishing the chimney and stone wall, he can now enjoy the leftover nuts too.

The final reveal will be tomorrow.  We still have to decorate the “yard”.  In the meantime, we’re off to start our Christmas cookies.
