Whimsical 70th Birthday

This past week, I had the privilege of making a cake for a very thoughtful daughter (not one of mine).  Her mom was turning 70.  She was surprising her with a party and wanted a special cake for the occasion.  For inspiration, she gave me a copy of the invitation and asked if I could make the cake look like the picture.  It’s funny how easy something appears when it’s a cute little drawing, but then you run into obstacles when translating it into life.  For instance, the color scheme was varying shades of pink and green with a few other colors thrown in…  When I began working with the colors, it started to look like a watermelon!  I rearranged the colors a bit and added a few things to distract from that effect.  Also, the top of the cake was essentially bare in the picture.  This is the focal point of the cake, so I added an edible gift bow.  Lastly, the cake body on the lower tier seemed almost blank, with the exception of a few polka dots.  I felt that such a large expanse of pink on pink would be less than attractive, so I opted to make this the “spot” for polka dots instead of the top.  The bow on top looked better on a plain background anyway.

To me, the best part about this cake was the realization of how small the world really is.  My friend at work (the toolman cake) showed her sister my website, who showed her coworker (the daughter) the website.  She called me, and we discovered that she was friends with another of my close friends (Hi Barb!).  My husband asked who the cake was for and I told him it was for a local teacher.  He works in the schools and asked which school and what did she teach.  It turns out that the girl who introduced us (her coworker – see above) is his client.  Are you confused yet???   Talk about references!
